Collins, [1939] 8vo., Twelfth Impression, some light offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; original green cloth, backstrip lettered in purple, a bright, clean copy in unclipped, bright, clean dust-wrapper, the latter mildly browned at backstrip and fold-ins, and with small chip (affecting lettering) at head of backstrip. The first Cheap Edition, issued in January 1939. With striking dust-wrapper artwork by J.L. Carstairs. Early impressions are uncommon in the dustwrapper. (Book ref. 25477)

Sold from an institution with its bookplate on front paste-down, neat accession data on series title verso and small Dewey serial in gilt at tail of backstrip. [Privately Printed], Manchester, 1909 8vo., First Edition, with 2 frontispieces and very numerous portraits, plates and facsimiles (a number full-page) in the text; original grey cloth, upper board elaborately blocked and lettered in gilt, gilt back, a remarkably bright, clean copy. The Society was established on 16 August 1858, registered on 7 January 1859 and commenced business on 16 March 1859; the author was public auditor. The illustrations include many valuable captioned photographs of branch offices and establishments, together with portraits of many of the organisation's early luminaries. [1938] Sm. 8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece, 15 plates on 14, 93 illustrations (11 full-page) and 10 plans (9 full-page) in the text, front endpaper maps and rear endpaper plan; cloth gilt, gilt back, endpapers a little browned else a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper, the latter with some slight foxing. This work, which deserves wider recognition, is arguably one of the best of the pre-War travellers' guides to its subject. Each individual location is placed in its architectural and clerical context in a readable manner while the glossary is charmingly illustrated and surprisingly compendious. The 10 full-page illustrations of key architectural features act as a valuable ready reference, a precursor of the achievements of Pevsner and his school yet to come. (Book ref. 416)
