Sheffield. Printed by Pawson & Brailsford for The Company of Cutlers. 1905/06. The 2 volume First Edition in the original quarter vellum & green cloth lettered gilt to spine & blocked coat-of-arms to the front boards,some discolouration to the spine of vol 1 but still an exceptionally clean sound set of this standard work on the Company who oversaw the cutlery trades for almost two hundred years from 1624 & then continued as a trademark sub-registry and mouthpiece of the cutlery, steel and edgetool industry. Its rules insisted that all apprenticeships in the cutlery trades had to be registered at the Cutlers' Hall, thereby assembling a wealth of biographical detail for over 30,000 people. Sheffield Pawson & Brailsford 1879. The "Best Edition" of the work first issued in 1862 and regularly re-issued until the turn of the century. Its scarcity partly explained by the number of copies broken for the print trade Here in red publishers cloth. Red and black title page additional "Birds-eye" engraved views of John Brown's & William Jessops and the maximum number of advertisements (160 pages many with a second colour ) Over forty engraved views of works and their interiors.Title page lightly foxed as usual in this edition and an above average copy of a sought after book.
