'He decided to walk and explore the length of Africa, not only to win the girl [Gertrude Watt] but also to survey Rhodes’ planned railway and telegraph route. Having come near to death many times, through hunger, sickness and cannibals, two and a half years later he reached Cairo. In England he was received by Queen Victoria and gave her the flag he had carried throughout. He married Gertrude and lectured in the Americas, but after Rhodes told him to dedicate himself to Africa, he settled down in Kenya in 1904 where, over fifty years, he acquired half a million acres, was deeply involved in politics and fought the British Colonial Government in defence of the settlers who often considered him a greater leader than Delamere. To prove a point against the government he publicly flogged three Africans and was imprisoned. He was often referred to as the Churchill of Kenya. During the First World War he won the D.S.O. for bravery as an Intelligence officer behind German lines in Tanganyika.' (From the dust-jacket). (Book ref. 06022)   £45.00
