Occasional spotting. Bound in half leather. Wear to the spines which are splitting down the edges. Lettering labels replaced sympathetically. Bookplate to each volume of the Shermershill library of the late Huw Jones. (Book ref. 006376)
Gloucester: John Jennings, 1937. Hard Cover. Fair. Preface dated 1937. [x], 437 pages + frontis and 22 other plates and 3 folding genealogies. Signed by the author to the title page and with a compliments slip loosely inserted. With the Shermershill bookplate of the late Huw Jones to the front pastedown. A browned newspaper cutting regarding the Hancox family is loosely inserted as are a few modern cuttings. In the original cloth binding, faded and worn. The rear edge of the spine is torn all the way down. The binding is coming loose and the sections are splitting internally. Some light browning and occasional spotting to the pages. Bound in the original embossed cloth, gilt decorated to the front board and gilt lettered to the spine. The spine is faded. Ink inscription to the front free end paper - Mrs Hampton As a slight acknowledgement of the kindness received by the Author's daughters, Nov 10 1862. Title page and first few pages spotted. Cheltenham: H Ruff, 1803. Hard Cover. Good. xvi, 358 pages + frontispiece and plate facing page 67. The author is not mentioned, but Hyett and Bazeley in their Bibliographer's manual of Gloucestershire literature state that it was the Rev Thomas Frognall Dibdin. This copy lacks the advert between pages xvi and 1 mentioned in H+B. Plates and adjoining pages browned. Small tears to the edges of pages 71/72 and 305-310. Larger tear to the upper outer corner of pages 349/350. Loosely inserted is a receipt for the book from 1949 when it cost 7s 6d from the Cathedral Galleries in Gloucester. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of Francis Frederick Fox. Bound in worn cloth, gilt lettered to the spine. Some ink lettering to the spine also. Spine chipped. Front hinge cracked. Frontis is heavily creased, edges are torn and there ioas asome loss to the title. Pages are top edge gilt. Spotted throughout. Original pale cloth, gilt lettered to spine [which is dated 1905] - soiled and browned. Ink number written at the base of the spine. An ex library book from the Bingham Library in Cirencester. Bookplate and ink stamp to the front pastedown, extract from bookseller's catalogue, withdrawn stamp and large glue stain to the front free end paper. Ink stamps to the first four unnumbered pages and approximately 11 more stamps throughout, including one below the colophon on the final page. Page edges untrimmed. Weston Subedge in Gloucestershire. Stains to the upper edges of pages 24 and 25 and the plate in between. Once part of the Phelps collection of Gloucestershire books with two bookplates to each volume and a gilt number at the foot of each spine. Vol 1 is browned and spotted throughout, Vol 2 less so. The second part of vol 2 is A country Squire or a Christmas gambol by Pylades, with its own title page and pagination, but the signatures are continuous. Vol 2 without the half title page.
