MAREY (E. J.): Le Vol des Oiseaux, (Physiologie du Mouvement),
First Edition, xvi, 394pp small folio, with numerous plates and illustrations, library cloth, a good copy, library stamp on title, head of spine slightly worn, Paris, Masson, 1890. From the old Air Ministry Library (Defence, London) with library marks and with a modern cancel stamp. IMPORTANT BOTH IN THE HISTORY OF FLIGHT AND IN THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY: THE ROUTE TO THE CINE-CAMERA. In his quest to analyse the motion of animals, particularly the flight of birds, Marey invented the fusil photographique', the photo-gun that took about 12 pictures per second and enabled him to ascertain the frequency of wingbeats per second of birds and insects. What made this book so important for the history of human flight are the marvellous pictures of birds which show exactly their wing- and flightfeather attitudes. For a full appreciation of the photo-gun, which eventually lead to the earliest cine-cameras, see Gernsheim's History of Photography. He calls the serial photos in this volume 'the most remarkable results so far obtained':- 'Just as Muybridge's work had originally been instigated by Marey's researches, so Muybridge was the direct cause which led Marey to abandon, in 1882, his chronographic methods in favour of chronophotography which afforded a more striking demonstration. Soon after his meeting with Muybridge, Marey, reverting to the idea of Dr Janssen's revolver', devised a photographic gun which he aimed at flying birds like an ordinary rifle, the pictures being taken round the edge of a circular revolving plate. At the end of the barrel, which could be extended or shortened like a telescope so as to focus the image, was a lens of long focus; near the butt end of the barrel was a cylindrical magazine containing the circular gelatine dry plate; in front of it in close contact was an opaque disk with twelve apertures, and in front of both another opaque disk with only one opening. On pressing the trigger a clockwork mechanism caused the three disks to rotate. The photographic plate and the disk with twelve apertures revolved once in a second, being stopped at intervals of one-twelfth of a second for each exposure of one-seven-hundred-and-twentieth of a second. On account of its weight, the glass plate could not revolve more rapidly, and the number of images was limited to twelve a second. In this way Marey obtained at short intervals successive images showing the different phases of a movement. The photographs of the flight of birds were the most remarkable results so far obtained. They were extremely small, but Marey modelled larger images in wax, and their animated effect was exceedingly realistic when exhibited in the zoetrope. Photograph available on request.
