KIDD (Benjamin): Social Evolution,
second reprint, x, 388pp 8vo, library stamp on title, impressed un-inked library stamp on title, London, Macmillan, 1894. First published in 1894. "For Benjamin Kidd (1858-1919) evolution was inevitable but progressive, not however that progress is intentional, for he saw no conscious purpose at work in primitive society. Progress, he argued, takes place in conditions of stress and conflict, In this he was partly influenced by Karl Marx's theory of dialectical struggle. Yet unlike Marx he believed that the movement of progressive societies is uniform in respect of growth of individual obligation, and with it the development of what we would today call individualistic attitudes. This development emerged from conflict, he said, for the advance of science made the "interests of the social organism and of the individual ... antagonistic, and the former must always be predominant, there can never be found any sanction in individual reason for conduct in societies (Book ref. 2470)   £18.00
