BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY PAPERS: RAILWAYS: IRISH UNIVERSITY PRESS: TRANSPORT, RAILWAYS
22 volumes large folio. This set contains the reports of the Royal Commissions and Select Committees whose thorough investigations of the economic, social and technical repercussions of railway development provided the information necessary for the formulation of government policy. The railway boom was over in the eighteen seventies and was followed by a period of amalgamations. During this period the level of railway rates and charges was under sustained attack by manufacturing and agricultural interests and several Select Committees were appointed to examine railway finances. The recommendations of these committees led to a complete reversal of government railway policy. Railway rates were brought under strict government control and remained frozen for nearly thirty years. While this benefited manufacturers and farmers initially, it prevented the railway companies from investing in new equipment and resulted in a deterioration in the quality of the service provided by the rail transport system. The set also includes papers dealing with railway accidents and accident prevention. Of particular interest are the reports of the Select Committees which investigated Goldsworthy Gurney's steam engines. Comprising: Reports.. on Steam Carriages and Mr Goldsworthy Gurney's Case, 1831-5; Reports.. on the State of Communication by Railways, 1840; Report.. on Railways, 1841; Reports.. on Railway Bills, 1844; Reports.. on Railway and Canal Amalgamations and Railway Acts, 1845-7; Report.. on Broad and Narrow Gauge Railways, 1846; Reports.. on Railway and Canal Amalgamations Bills and on Railway and Canal Legislation, 1852-8; Report of the Royal Commission on the Railways of Great Britain and Ireland, 1867; Report.. on the Amalgamation of Railway Companies, 1872; Report.. on Railway Accidents, 1877; Report on the Select Committee on Charges for the Conveyance of Goods on Railways and Canals, 1881; Report.. on Railways (Rates and Fares) and Reports of the Board of Trade of Proceedings under the Railway and Canal traffic Acts, 1882-9Report.. on Railway Rates and Charges Provisional Order Bills, 1890-4. Of the 22 volumes, one is on steam carriages (turnpike tolls &c), one is on steam vessels (accidents, explosions) and 20 are on the railways (accidents, communication, amalgamation, gauges, rates and charges, fares &c). * PHOTOGRAPHS & FURTHER DETAILS OF CONTENTS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. There are approximately 5,000 British Parliamentary Papers for the period 1800 to 1900 - a mountain of source material that, however, because of its traditional chronological arrangement, has been difficult to access. The Irish University Press programme of facsimile reprints of these papers overcame this by commissioning academic specialists to select the most important papers and group them on the principle of 32 subject sets in the folio size of the originals. This series was published c.1960-1972. All the volumes are strongly bound in the publisher's original half green morocco leather with the exception of 1 volume which is bound in the publisher's matching green buckram. They are designed to outlast generations of heavy use and wear and have the great advantage over the original printings because on a strong laid acid free paper. Reproductions of original maps and other illustrations are included throughout the series. Each volume now offered has neat library stamp on front endpaper and verso title, otherwise entirely unmarked and in excellent condition. (Book ref. 20109)   £1100.00
