Proboscis Monkeys of Borneo
. 9838120014 Illustrated, pp x, 76, very slight marking to the endpapers, otherwise a good copy in a very slightly worn dustwrapper. [The proboscis monkey, one of Borneo's most famous wild creatures, is mainly found in coastal swamp forests and does not occur anywhere else in the world. A great fascination for travellers throughout the past two centuries and today's concerned scientists and conservationists, but hitherto not made the subject of a book, the proboscis monkey is a most unique and peculiar mammal. This book helps explain the proboscis monkey's social organisation, habits, biology, restricted distribution and conservation needs and contains some of the best and most dramatic colour photographs of this species in its natural surroundings. The book's clear and simple style, in spite of a mine of information included, reaches out to even young children who have already embarked on a reading career.] (Book ref. 004617) £10.00

Headhunting and the Social Imagination in Southeast Asia
Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1996. First Edition. Cloth. New/New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0804725748 Brings together comparative material on headhunting in a number of Southeast Asian societies, to examine the cultural contexts in which such practices occurred, and to relate them to colonial history, violence, and ritual. Over the last century, colonial conquest or "pacification" has more or less effectively stopped the practice, but its rituals continue to be performed. Ethnographers of seven regions (the Philippine highlands, Sarawak, Brunei, and South Borneo, and the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi, Sumba, and Timor) share their experiences of living with former headhunters (including an eyewitness account of a headhunting feast), attending rituals, and collecting oral histories to understand the heritage of headhunting in context. In asking what meaning taking heads has assumed in the postcolonial era, they report on contemporary people who reenact headhunts, often with effigies or surrogates for the head itself.
