Russell, Bertrand History of Western Philosophy, and its connection with political and social circumstances from the earliest times to the present day.
London: George Allen & Unwin, 1946. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. FIRST EDITION. Large thick 8vo, pp 916, a very slight mark to the fore-edge, very slight suggestion of age-toning to the pages, a tiny suggestion of browning or sunning to a very small portion of the cloth, otherwise a really clean sound copy. DUSTWRAPPER. Lacking a smallish piece at the head and the spine and a few very small chips at the base (see illustration), a slight bruise or crease to the middle of its spine, a few minute chips missing from the top edge of the lower cover, slight browning to the fold-over flaps, otherwise a good bright dw which is not price-clipped. A wonderful aspect of this scarce dustwrapper is that, with true post-war economy, it is printed on the blank side of an already printed map - presumably many such states exist, but the map used here would appear to be a coloured map of Poland. [A great copy of a seminal twentieth century work) [A History of Western Philosophy (1945) by the philosopher Bertrand Russell is a conspectus of Western philosophy from the pre-Socratic philosophers to the early 20th century. Although criticised for its over-generalization and its omissions, particularly from the post-Cartesian period, it was a popular and commercial success, and has remained in print from its first publication. When Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950, the book was cited as one of those that won him the award. The book provided Russell with financial security for the last part of his life. Russell himself had something to say about the book: "I regarded the early part of my History of Western Philosophy as a history of culture, but in the later parts, where science becomes important, it is more difficult to fit into this framework. I did my best, but I am not at all sure that I succeeded. I was sometimes accused by reviewers of writing not a true history but a biased account of the events that I arbitrarily chose to write of. But to my mind, a man without bias cannot write interesting history — if, indeed, such a man exists." A comparison of the biases of Bertrand Russell, to the biases of his critics could have great explanatory value. Russell was definitely biased toward evidence-based thinking free from fear, hope, and prejudice. This bias he clearly states.] (Book ref. 006648) £30.00

Towill, Edwin Sprott People and Places in the Story of the Scottish Church
Edinburgh: St Andrew Press, 1976 First edition. Paperback, line drawings Pagination: xviii, 99. In handy alphabetical order, notes are presented on over 180 selected people and places of interest and importance in the long and fascinating story of the Church in all its forms in Scotland. In addition, over 460 cross-references are provided to assist in tracing connected names and sites.
This is neither a biographical dictionary nor a religious gazetteer. The author has made his own wide choice of subjects, on which he then gives his impressions and comments, the results of careful research on the people and of personal visits to most of the places mentioned. The choice concentrates not on the best-known figures or most-visited places but rather on those which, though significant, tend to be passed over in popular histories and guidebooks, covering not only the Catholic and Protestant streams of the Church but also some strange and lesser-known sects. The book is intended for readers wanting to learn about the ecclesiastical institutions in their locality, for visitors eager to uncover some of the romance of Scottish church history, and not least for teachers and students whose projects in environmental studies will be incomplete unless they include the church buildings and religious monuments of the country. All who use these notes should find in them a little about the highways and quite a lot about the byways of Scottish life as it related to the things of the spirit.
Mr Towill’s easy-to-use compilation is the first of its kind on this subject, with an approach wide enough to be of interest and value to a great variety of readers, regardless of denomination or religious faith. A chronological index of people and a geographical index of places are provided, plus a section on bibliography and sources, and the whole work is further enhanced by Colin Gibson’s fine drawings.. Book: single light crease to spine, corners of covers a little bumped, VG, Jacket: n/a (Book ref. 3103) £9.00

Brown, Callum G Religion and Society in Scotland Since 1707
Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 1997 First edition. Paperback, bibliography, index Pagination: x, 219. In this topical and thought-provoking book Callum Brown examines the key role of religion in the making of modern Scottish society since the Union of 1707. Tackling important contemporary themes in Scottish history such as the role of the Kirk in national identity, and the growth of secularisation and sectarianism the author offers original research and challenging interpretations.
The volume provides a coherent overview of the rise and fall of religion in recent Scottish social history, highlighting the development of Presbyterianism, Catholicism and Episcopalianism, as well as that of many minor churches and sects. Also included are detailed explorations of the Scottish church structure, religion in rural and urban society, the religions crisis of 1890-1930, and the impact upon religion of social change in the second half of the twentieth century.
This book is a completely revised and updated new edition of the author’s Social History of Religion in Scotland since 1730.
