Woodhouse, Robert Gateshead : A Pictorial History
UK: Phillimore & Co. Ltd, 1992. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Lge 8vo 0850338255 GATESHEAD has seen dramatic changes in recent years. Dual carriageways, underpasses and relief roads have scythed through the old town to link up with river crossings and the regional capital, Newcastle upon Tyne, adding to the clearance of sectors of older housing, replaced by multi-storey flats. Until 1951 it was still possible to chart the growth of the town from its buildings, despite earlier demolitions to make way for the approach to the Tyne Bridge, opened in 1925, and the wholesale destruction of the riverside settlement before the First World War. This book will be particularly welcome in a town so dramatically transformed, for it vividly and visually reveals old Gateshead as it used to be. An important bridging point had been established here in the Roman period and by A.D. 630 there was a growing settlement around Abbot Utta's monastery. Bishop de Puiset of Durham granted certain borough rights as early as 1164 and a hundred years later a thriving market was operating. Coal mining brought increasing prosperity in the 14th century, though large-scale development did not begin until the early 18th century when deep mining operations brought further industrial expansion with iron foundries and glass-works. By the 19th century chemical works, rope making and engineering added more trade, more people and more buildings to what was now a big and important town. The author is a well-known local historian who has provided in this hook both a very readable account of the town's entire history and, in a profusion of carefully selected and captioned old photographs, an evocative picture of the place and its people in the past. Recent developments like the Metro Centre and the Garden Festival site have focused attention on Gateshead, while impressive church buildings, the Shipley Art Gallery and Saltwell Park provide isolated glimpses of its heritage. This new book will serve to remind residents and visitors alike of the richness and variety of that heritage. (Book ref. 127893) £15.00
