Few biographies have caught more of the spirit and colour of the age of Charles II than this life of Sir Robert Holmes.Adventurous, energetic, extravagant, combative and unscrupulous, he first attracted the attention of prince Rupert as a young cavalry officer in the Civil War.As a Royalist exile, he accompanied the Prince first into the French service and then, in one of the strangest and most romantic episodes in naval history, on a cruise that carried the Royalist colours, no longer flying in England, to Portugal, the Mediterranean, West Africa and the West Indies. After Charles II's Restoration, Holmes twice commanded naval expeditions to the Gambia and the Gold Coast where his bold and thrusting policy was, in the opinion of many, the main cause of the Second Dutch War.In the fierce and furious actions that followed, Holmes won a high reputation for courage and skill, destroying,in perhaps the most successful single feat of arms of the century, a great part of the Dutch merchant marine at a cost of hardly a dozen casualties. This was the period that saw the founding of a modern, professional, whole-time Navy.Pepys, the greatest naval administrator in our history, was the architect of a service that for three hundred years has been the symbol of English power and the support of English policy. For thirty years Pepys and Holmes intrigued, manoeuvred, and quarrelled over naval matters, ending with a respect, perhaps even a kindness, for each other. But conflict, whether with the enemy or with brother officers, was the keynote of Holmes's long and fascinating career. To follow it is to see the Navy of the Restoration from an unusual angle and to feel the inexhaustible vitality and gusto of the age. The overthrow of the Spanish Armada in 1588 has come down in history as one of England's 'finest hours'.A small, inadequately equipped fleet put to rout the mightiest naval force ever assembled; great squadrons of ships, drawn from all the provinces of the Spanish empire, were sent scuttling in disarray round the north of Scotland, many to founder on the on the shores of Ireland. The great enterprise, four years in the planning, that was to have subjugated the impertinent little kingdom of Elizabeth I, ended in a crushing humiliation for the world's most powerful ruler. Alexander McKee has gone back to the original eye-witness accounts to throw new light on this apparent miracle, presenting a dramatic reconstruction described by those who actually took part in the campaign, on both sides. The result is living history, a reassessment that reveals many parallels with the critical summer of 1940. With the freshness of last night's news, four-hundred-year-old voices speak to us of armies massing on the coast of the Low Countries; of the bumbling incompetence that eventually brought the cumbersome Armada, by fits and false starts, within sight of England; of swift and devastating assualts by the nippy little English galleons; of the panic-stricken flight into the North Sea; and of hardship and death and, throughout the action, a desperate need for more ammunition and food.Seen as a vivid documentary, the reasons why the deadly threat of Spain collapsed in ruins are thrown into high relief. First published 25 years ago, this new edition is substantially rewritten and includes an additional chapter on the significant discoveries now being made on the wrecks. There are new photographs, and the book is presented in a handsome larger format.Written by the discoverer and excavator of the 'Mary Rose', an historian who has spent most of his life on the South Coast and is therefore well able to understand the eccenticities of wind and current that Drake and Hawkyns used to such good effect, this fresh and lively approach to a crucial event in our history remains an outstanding contribution to the study of naval warfare. This book is something more than an ordinary town history, for Southampton is something more than an ordinary town.It has had a long, important and varied past as a port, a fortress, a fashionable resort and then as a port again: and in the traces of this past are still written large in its streets and buildings. But it is not merely an ancient and historic city, not even just Britain's greatest passenger port, it is also a paramount example of how a town and its inhabitants can move with the times, making the most of their historical heritage and overcoming notable times of stress and depression. For Southampton is still living in its finest hour (then 1970).It has always been in England's frontline, against Spaniards, French and Germans. In the last war it was the cradle of the Spitfire and the springboard of the invasion of Europe, and from that war it emerged battered, stunned, half-ruined but unbowed.'We shall build anew. . .' declared its leading newspaper on the morrow of its most devastating blitz. That gallant pledge has proved to be an understatement of what Southampton has done in the last twenty years, for its amazing recovery has gone well beyond even a Phoenix-like resurrection of one of the most bomb-shattered towns in Britain to its former state. The new Southampton that has not so much taken the place of the old as blended with it or absorbed it, is a regional capital rising to strengths it did not know before; modern, attractive, splendidly equipped and adorned with fine modern buildings. The Sotonians may not perhaps have the sharply defined and striking charactersitics of the inhabitants of some of the more celebrated or publicised parts of Britain. But they are a quiet, dogged, courageous and dependable people; a very British people, who cope with things and get them done without a very great deal of noise or self-advertisement.They have in the post-war years crowned their long history with an achievement which the whole country should know and of which it should be proud. It is that history and that achievement which are set out in these pages. The author is emeritus Professor at the University of Southampton. The 2nd volume, after uniform volume; NOTTINGHAM, in a planned series,to include READING, GUILDFORD, CHELTENHAM, NORWICH, NEWCASTLE and LEICESTER - all of which, at this publication date - are in preparation.Meanwhile, an uncommon title and edn from the series. It is easy to forget that for almost twenty-two years of her enormously long reign Queen Victoria was a wife and a woman deeply in love.Prince Albert was everything to her and increasingly influenced the Queen's every thought and action.Yet popular history paints a portrait of a reclusive widow and strong-willed successful sovereign, held in esteem bordering on reverence by her vast Empire. This seeming paradox stimulated HRH The Duchess of York's interest in Queen Victoria and prompted her to research the extraordinary relationship that developed between the Queen and Prince, and as an expression of it, the home they created on the Isle of Wight. The Royal Archives at Windsor Castle revealed how, together, they built Osborne House to escape the intense pressures and lack of privacy synonymous with their position. While Prince Albert pursued his plans and improvements for the house and the grounds, the Queen delighted in her freedom, experimenting with landscape painting and seabathing. It was a perfect environment in which to bring up their growing brood of children and to rejoice in each other's company, dining together, dancing, playing whist or arranging albums of pictures. 'Victoria and Albert:Their Life at Osborne House' is an original and compelling tale of royal family life, from the early years together to the tragedy of Prince Albert's premature death, and of the house that can be seen as a monument to their marriage. In the very personal Preface, the Duchess of York reveals the curious coincidences of shared experience that have given her a clear understanding of her subject. With 200 beautiful illustrations this book offers a fresh insight into the private life of this famous couple.
