Scotland is really half a dozen diverse and colourful countries in one; and its people are amongst the most ancient, proud and emphatic in the world. a land famous for its natural beauty, in the forefront of technological development, it can also boast some of the best managed farming lands on earth; whole provinces, rich in small industries, market towns, peaceful resorts, modern development and ancient churches, abbeys, castles; a coastline unrivalled in its dramatic contrasts of islands, cliffs, rocks and splendid sands, dotted with innumerable fishing villages; cities of great character and pride, not so large as to have lost their individuality; burghs that were old when the Conqueror came to England.
