Gifford, John The Buildings of Scotland: Highlands and Islands
London: Penguin, 1992 First edition. Blue leatherette, gilt, maps, plans, bw plates, glossary, index Pagination: 683. This volume, the fifth in the Buildings of Scotland series founded by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, aims to describe every building of importance from prehistory to the present in the Highland region, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland. The vast area covered by the book contains buildings and monuments as varied as its landscape – brochs, cairns and ceremonial settings of standing stones; cathedrals and abbeys, both medieval and Victorian; churches of every period and denomination, their interiors and graveyards often shielding unexpected delights. Castles and tower houses and a string of Hanoverian forts contrast with prehistoric farmsteads and Georgian and Victorian farmhouses. Country houses range from a display of ducal splendour through Georgian elegance and Victorian baronial to expressions of the high ideals and simple life of the Arts and Crafts movement. Towns and vilalges are equally varied; some are of medieval origin, others new creations of the Georgians and Victorians. All these are covered by John Gifford with scholarship and insight.
This comprehensive and excellently illustrated volume, its gazetteer elucidated by numerous maps and plans, is an illuminating guide to the architecture of a little-known region, for visitors, for specialists and, not least, for local inhabitants. McLaren, Moray; Kersting, A F (photos); Mackenzie, Compton (foreword) Scotland in Colour
London: Batsford, 1954 First edition. Red cloth, 32 col photos Pagination: 111. Scotland, more than any other part of the British Isles, lends itself to photography in colour. The changing hues of the sea and the islands, the lochs and the Highlands, the towns and the Lowlands, are at once subtler and more brilliant than anywhere else in Britain. In A F Kersting they have found a photographer who is both an artist and an extremely skilled technician. Mr Kersting is well aware that the general run of colour photography presents a travesty of the scene it is supposed to represent. As the illustrations to his earlier book, The Face of England, showed, he himself is able to achieve a degree of faithfulness in the representation of nature which has seldom been equalled, and certainly never before in the illustrations to a book on Scotland.
Moray McLaren, who has written the long essay which accompanies Mr Kersting’s photographs, claims that he knows the country of his birth as intimately as any man alive. Be that as it may, his account of the face of Scotland is sensitive, fresh, and written with an obvious affection which will endear it to Scot and Sassenach alike. Contents: Colour photos: The castle of Macleod of Dunvegan, Skye; Clouds over Ben Nevis seen from Corpach; Morning sun on Calton Hill, Edinburgh; The view from Arthur’s Seat across Edinburgh; The River Tweed near Tweedsmuir, Peeblesshire; Looking south-east across Dundee and the Firth of Tay; The River Dochart at Killin, Perthshire, with Ben Lawers; The Bruar Falls near Blair Atholl, Perthshire; Looking west along the River Tay between Aberfeldy and Kenmore, Perthshire; Evening on Loch Insh near Kincraig, Inverness-shire; Monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie, Glenfinnan, Loch Shiel, Inverness-shire; Inverness: bridges over the River Ness; Glenshiel, Ross and Cromarty; Looking to Bidean nan Bian above Glen Etive, Argyllshire; Ruins of Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, Kincardineshire; Looking across Gruinard Bay to Ben More, Coigach, Ross and Cromarty; Kintail Hills at the head of Loch Duich, Ross and Cromarty; Brig o’ Dee, Braemar, Aberdeenshire; St Andrews from the golf links; Looking to Slioch from Loch Maree near the Bridge of Grudie, Ross and Cromarty; Dunfermline Abbey, Fife; Loch Coruisk and the Cuillin Hills, Skye; Balmoral Castle and the mountains of Balmoral Forest, Aberdeenshire; Aberdeen harbour; Crail harbour, Fife; Barcaldine Castle and Loch Creran, Argyllshire; Elgin Cathedral; Dunblane Cathedral, Perthshire; Gairloch, Ross and Cromarty; Hart Fell from the Devil’s Beef Tub, Moffat, Dumfriesshire; Lighthouse and harbour at Macduff, Banffshire; Stonehaven harbour, Aberdeenshire. Cromartie, Earl of A Highland History
Berkhamstead: The Gavin Press, 1979 First edition. Blue cloth, gilt, map endpapers, glossary, index Pagination: xvii, 345. Planned and written by the Earl of Cromartie while a prisoner of war in Germany, this book was completed on his return home when the necessary research could be made. Information has been collected from many sources national, clan and local; histories, letters, diaries, biographies, church and burgh records; and a manuscript History of Clan Mackenzie written by Sir George Mackenzie, Viscount Tarbat, 1st Earl of Cromartie, during the 17th century. Contemporary papers, charters and letters including the Cromartie Papers in his own family possession, the Munro Papers and Balnagown (Ross) documents all covering the period from the 13th century were consulted. As a Highlander gives his own tradition and legend, so the Earl of Cromartie himself as a Highlander gives his view of Scottish and world events. Although unpublished for thirty years, with so much attention in 1979 on Scotland this history has a place in the current debate. Starting with prehistoric ancestors and the arrival of the Iberians, the Pictish Kingdom of Alba and the tribes in the Province of Ross are described in those far off days. The way of life, dress and homes of the inhabitants of the Highlander are given in detail as the history evolves. The Norsemen and their influence is shown with the emergence of the clans and clan systems. The history of Scotland from the Highland viewpoint also shows how the families, clans and septs played their part. The Appendices given detailed ancestry of the major Highland clans with commentary and the Table of Scottish and English Kings shows the growth and joining together of the two kingdoms. The glossary contains much of interest and amusement for those who believe in legends’ place in history. The opinions of the Earl of Cromartie expressed in A Highland History have a meaning both for today and the future of Scotland..
