Schmid, Hagen Desert Sea : Fauna of the Saudi Arabian Red Sea Coast
Hong Kong: Printed By Paramount Printing Co. Ltd., 1997. Second Revised Edition. Cloth/Laminated Boards. New/Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall 3000012931 Heavy Item Postage Quote In the past the bird and mammal populations of the Arabian Peninsula were well protected by the physical size of the country and its sparsely inhabited deserts. With the discovery of large oil deposits, and following the introduction of industrialisation in the Middle East, extensive road and construction commenced, opening up the region. The photographs in this book may give the impression of a still perfect underwater world, that today is hardly found anymore. Nowadays when one is diving or snorkelling in these waters, one wonders if this is really the same sea. Most photographs were taken on days with exceptionally good underwater visibility. Often it took months or years to get a nearly perfect picture. The creatures are shown in their natural environment, which can be between broken corals or on top of sunken shipwrecks. Whenever known, their common and scientific names, as well as the name and date of the scientist who described them, are given. The texts are kept intentionally short so they do not distract from the shores of the Red Sea. They show the structure of the ever shifting sand dunes, the date palm trees, the laced wooden window facades and the soft coral fans. 203pp. (Book ref. 028275) £15.00

Hilden, Joy Totah Bedouin Weaving of Saudi Arabia and Its Neighbours
London: Arabian Publishing Ltd, 2011. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. As New/No d/j as Published. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall 9780955889486 Heavy Item Postage Quote Portable and practical, tough and colourful, Bedouin textiles played until recent times a vital and functional part in the life of the Arab nomads. Bedouin women were expected to master the art of making entire tents as well as a wide range of rugs, saddlebags and other equipment able to withstand the rigours of the desert. They took a fierce pride in their work and produced, on the simplest ground looms, textiles that were at once hard-wearing and of vibrant aesthetic appeal. The true craftspeople of the desert, Bedouin women wove to provide the very fabric of day-to-day living. Joy Hilden describes the weaving techniques of the Bedouin in the context of their transitional mode of life, as they adapt from their centuries-old nomadic existence to being both semi- and fully settled. She gathered her information on dyeing, spinning and weaving while living and travelling in Saudi Arabia between 1982 and 1994, extending her scope with trips to other parts of the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent Arab countries. She describes visits to Bedouin families, desert markets and urban centres where Bedouin gathered. Her work comes at a time when many tribal peoples are losing their cultural traditions and, with them, their crafts and the material of everyday life in the desert. This is the most exhaustive study to date of the weaving methods practised by the Bedouin of Saudi Arabia. Profusely illustrated, and giving thorough instruction in techniques, "Bedouin Weaving" is an essential companion for collectors and connoisseurs of flat-weave textiles, the category into which Bedouin weavings fall. It is aimed both at general readers and at weavers, craftspeople in general, students, ethnographers, and museum and textile authorities. 270pp. N.B. Slight bump to base of spine.
