Edwardian Britain has often been described as a golden sunlit afternoon - personified by its genial and self-indulgent King.In fact, modern Britain was born during the reign of Edward VII, when politics, science, literature and the arts were turned upside down. In Parliament the peers were crushed for the first time since the Magna Carta.Irish nationalists and sufferagettes took politics out onto the streets.Home Rule and Votes for Women were delayed, not precipitated, by the First World War. Great parliamentary stars such as Lloyd George and Churchill typified an era in which personalities dominated the headlines of the new tabloid newspapers. It was the age of Rolls and Royce, Scott and Shackleton, Elgar, G.B.Shaw, the Pankhursts and Mrs Alice Keppel, whose social life was reported without mention of her relationship with the King. The theatre of ideas superseded drawing-room dramas.Novelists of genius - from Henry James to D.H.Lawrence - produced a masterpiece each year.A London gallery caused a sensation with an exhibition of 'Post-Impressionists'.Edward Elgar was the first English composer for two hundred years to stand comparison with the continental European masters. In sport, Victorian chivalry was replaced with unashamed professionalism. Man flew for the first time and the motor car became a common sight on city streets.Physicists examined the structure of the atom and philosophers disputed the traditional definition of virtue. The Churches tried, without success, to confront and confound a new scepticicsm.Explorers sought to prove that men could live, and die, like gods. Drawing on previously unpublished diaries and letters, Roy Hattersley's The Edwardians is a beguiling account of a turbulent and frequently misunderstood period. It is a full and often humorous portrait of an era that he elevates to its rightful place in British history. At Christmas 1914 on the Western Front, British and German soldiers sang carols to each other and fraternized openly in No Man's Land. They exchanged souvenirs, took photographs and in many cases freely admitted they had no wish to make war.A British officer who took part in the Christmas Truce wrote (thus reversing an old saying) 'It wasn't war, but it was magnificent.' People who find no interest in tales of battles and campaigns are drawn to the story of the Christmas Truce, yet among the thousands of books on the Great War, there has never been one on this highly emotive and fascinating subject. This book is intended to fill the gap.Its authors demonstrate that the truce was much more extensive, involved many more and lasted far longer than has hitherto been realized. In some areas, it was not until February 1915 thatw ar began again in earnest and it was characterized in many cases by the most astonishing friendliness and courtesy between opposing trenches. The authors who also collaborated in the BBC television documentary 'Peace in No Man's Land' have undertaken a far-reaching programme of research. They have combed the war diaries of units involved, talked to participants, collected a remarkable range of contemporary letters and journals and even unearthed some amusing anecdotes. "One human episode amid all the atrocities", was ConanDoyle's verdict on the Christmas Truce - and it is the human aspect which the authors believe give it its particular significance and appeal. 'It is' they suggest, 'perhaps the best and most heartening Christmas story of modern times.' (Book ref. rja4050/11) £19.99

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, crisp, clean, photographic illustrated dw/dj, with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Head+foot of spine/backstrip both minisculely bumped with reciprocal creasing.Top+fore-edges generally bright and clean; contents bright, tight and clean also - no dog-ear creases to any pages' corners.Bright, clean, sharp-cornered, publisher's original, plain black cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped red gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white eps.8vo, 2-354pp [paginated], acknowledgements, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, dedication, 6pp blanks at rear. It is 1919, and Niska, the last Canadian Indian medicine woman to live off the land, has received word that one of the two boys she grudgingly saw off to the Great War has returned. She leaves her home in the snowy northern wilderness and paddles her canoe upriver to retrieve him, only to discover that the one she expected is actually the other. Xavier Bird, her sole living relative, gravely wounded and addicted to the army's morphine, hovers somewhere between the worlds of the living and the dead.As Niska paddles him the three days home, she realises that all she can offer in her attempt to keep him aliv is her words: the stories of her life. In turn, Xavier relates the horrfying years of war in Europe: how he and his best friend, Elijah Whiskeyjack, prowled the battlefields of France and Belgium as snipers of remarkable skill. As their reputations grew, the two young men, with their hand-sewn moccasins and extraordinary markmanship, became both the pride and fear of their regiment as they stalked the ripe killing fields of Ypres and the Somme. In doing so their friendship was tested to its limits. But what happened to Elijah? As Niska paddles deeper into the wilderness, both she and Xavier must untangle the past and confront the devastation that such great conflict leaves in its wake. Inspired in part by the real-life, Ojibwa-Indian, First-World-War hero Francis Pegahmagabow, 'Three Day Road' reinvents the tradition of the Great War epic.Beautifully written and told with unblinking focus, it is a remarkable tale of brutality, survival and rebirth. 'An extraordinary novel.I would urge anyone who thinks they have read enough about 1914-1918 to think again. . . . they won't find anything better than this.' SUSAN HILL. FUKUI (SHIZUO): Japanese Naval Vessels Survived. Their Post-War Activities and Final Disposition. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY IN PUBLISHER'S SLIP-CASE
Shuppan Kyodo Publishers, Tokyo, 1961 4to., First Edition, text entirely in Japanese, skeleton picture captions in English, with very numerous photographs and illustrations throughout; original blue boards, blue cloth back, upper board lettered in gilt in English, backstrip lettered in gilt in Japanese, brown silk marker, a near fine copy in unclipped d/w, the whole housed in the publisher's original card slip-case, the case mildly worn and frayed at extremities. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO ANTHONY PAVIA WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. With the publisher's separately printed slip giving the context of the work, and the original bilingual price slip. The publisher's note makes it clear that this work, although the first to appear in print, was conceived as the third volume of a projected three-volume series 'Survey on the Japanese Naval Vessels 1925-1947'. It seems unlikely, however, that any further volumes were published and that this volume therefore stands alone; CERTANLY IT CONSTITUTES THE FINEST PUBLISHED COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF ITS TYPE. Constructor Lieutenant-Commander Shizuo Fukui (1913-1993), Imperial Japanese Navy, was one of the world's foremost experts on ship design and naval construction. He was the author of some fourteen books and numerous magazine articles, which form collectively the definitive photographic record of the IJN. His wartime appointments ranged from the HQ of the Combined Fleet to the Navy Technical Institute; he ended his service career as Chief Officer and Director of Naval Construction at one of the major naval shipyards. After the war he devoted himself to historical research and made a lifelong contribution to the preservation of the records of ships of the Imperial Navy. His private library eventually contained over 20,000 photos, most of them unique, of which the great majority remains unpublished. Anthony Pavia was the owner of an archive of related photographs which it is believed found a home in the UK after Pavia's death. We are indebted to Mr. Robin Bursell for the information on Anthony Pavia. SIGNED COPIES OF ANY WORK BY FUKUI ARE RARE. (Book ref. 19373) £420.00
