Published by John Murray, Albemarle Street, London, 1878. Hard cover, dark green cloth, 8vo, xviii + 436pp + publisher's catalogue. First Edition. Condition: boards and spine are in reasonable condition except for some damp staining on both boards (not the spine) which takes the form of lighter green patches. The hinges are a little slack but not cracked at all. The black front pastedown bears a cut-out oval engraved crest of Robert Waley Cohen, with the family motto "All For The Best". On the first white endpaper is the following inscription by the author: "To Robert Waley Cohen, with the best wishes of Samuel Smiles, London 26th July 1890". The young Robert would have been just 13 years of age. He went on to become the Chairman of Shell, and his son was to be Sir Bernard Waley-Cohen, who was Lord Mayor of London in 1960. The frontispiece engraving of Robert Dick is present but has some faint but quite extensive staining, and its tissue guard is perfect. The rest of the book is VG and all the plates are present and excellent. Packed weight 1000g. (Book ref. 16438) £118.50
