Is it ethically permissible to use animals for research¿whether to test new drugs, for organ transplants, or as genetically altered suppliers of spare parts for human beings? In this sweeping history of animal research and protection, Deborah Rudacille shows how such questions, and the answers provided by both scientists and antivivisectionists over the past 150 years, have shaped contemporary society. From Pasteur's experiments with anthrax and rabies to Wilmut and Campbell's cloning of Dolly, Rudacille describes a remarkable trajectory of scientific progress, one that has been accompanied by vocal, if not virulent, opposition. The ethical issues were not just fomented by animal protectionists but suffused the fiction of Mary Shelley, the autobiographical writings of Mary Kingsford, the philosophy of Michel Foucault. But Rudacille anchors her riveting narrative in events from the lives of key figures in the history of the war between science and animal protection: Claude Bernard's scientific rationale for vivisection, articulated in France in 1865; Hermann G6ring's bizarre elevation of animal life¿at the expense of the human¿during the Third Reich; the intimidating tactics of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA; and, more recently, the willingness of some activists and organizations¿such as Andrew Rowan and Martin L. Stephens of HSUS and Christine Stevens and Cathy Liss of the Animal Welfare Institute¿to work within the system for change. Rudacille acknowledges that it may be difficult to bridge the chasm that separates those who believe that under no circumstances is it permissible for animals to be used in scientific experimentation from those to whom the natural world, including even the human genome, is a plastic and infinitely malleable tool. But it's undeniable that both science and animal protection have important roles to play in the newly evolving ethic of earth stewardship. Integrating the rationalist ethos of science (the scalpel) with the intuitive and holistic worldview of animal protection and environmentalism (the butterfly) is vital if we are to solve the problems which threaten the survival of all species and to meet the challenge posed by newly emerging diseases. Brilliantly written, far-ranging in its research, and remarkable for balancing¿with empathy and insight¿radically opposed viewpoints, The Scalpel and the Butterfly stands as a first-rate work of investigative science journalism. Deborah Rudacille was researcher/writer at the John Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing from 1992 to 1997. Co-author of Animals and Alternatives in Testing: History, Science and Ethics, she lives in Baltimore, Maryland. ". Those who believe, as I do, that animals have rights . should arm themselves with the information in this valuable book." (Elizabeth Marshall Thomas) ". an engaging survey of historical highlights of the controversy over animal research . should be required reading for anyone ." (Martin L. Stephens, Vice President for Animal Research Issues, The Humane Society of the United States). Bookseller Inventory # 015434 (Book ref. 16381) £8.00
