When the Dowager Empress of China died in 1908, her favourite Pekingnese was led before her coffin by the chief eunuch, following a precedent of some nine hundred years' standing.Queen Victoria, entertaining Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie at Windsor, regarded a visit to the kennels as the high point of an afternoon's walk. And contemporary chroniclers of the French Revolution rather implausibly claimed that Marie Antoinette's dog, Thisbee, was so distraught at the queen's incarceration that it committed suicide. For monarchs and their consorts, cats, dogs and the occasional parrot have acted as constant companions, unquestionong allies, surrogate children and silent repositories of whispered confidences. For their isolated children, cats and dogs were often the only source of emotional comfort and warmth. From Empress Josephine's collection of pugs (who had their own personal maid in spite of Napoleon's distaste for them) to Elizabeth II's dynasty of corgis, the history of these pampered pets offers us a fascinating and often hilarious peek into the exalted world of their owners. Using a rich source of previously untapped historical documnetation, Katharine MacDonogh has written a revolutionary account - seen from floor level - of court life since the Renaissance. It was a moment a ship's cat shared with great men making history in a time of crisis. In August 1941 Britain's Prime Minister Winston Churchill, sailed aboard the battleship HMS Prince of Wales to meet USA President Franklin Roosevelt. America was not yet in the war.Germany had marched on Russia, which Churchill thought would be overrun. His mission:to persuade America to provide aid "on a gigantic scale" to Russia, with the effort co-ordinated by Britain.Roosevelt was aboard the heavy cruiser Augusta and the two ships met at Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. As Churchill, attended by a five-man guard, prepared to step off the Prince of Wales, the ship's cat approached, seemingly to wish him well or to go aboard the Augusta too.It provided a moment for smiles from all ranks on both ships before the serious business began. From August 11, in three days of negotiation, Churchill's team secured the American commitment they sought:more merchant ships to bring bombers and tanks to Britain, an escort of five destroyers and a cruiser for every North Atlantic convoy, taking over patrolling much of the ocean and delivering bombers and training to Britain and her forces in North Africa. Further, Roosevelt and Churchill signed the Atlantic Charter, setting out their vision for the world after the war, with its far-reaching pledge "to respect the rights of all peoples to choose the form of government under which they live". The ship's cat was promptly renamed Churchill after his moment of fame was photographed for the world's press. Searching for an idea for a book with a nautical focus, the author realised there had been books written about ships and books written about cats, but nobody seemed to have written one about ships' cats.On investigation, she found numerous true stories of ships' cats that had sailed with famous explorers, ships' cats that earned medals for bravery, ships' cats that accompanied lone round-the-world sailors and even ships' cats that were bewitched. So it seemed a good idea to compile abook about them. These are their stories, in war and peace, discovery and disaster, fact and fable, poetry and ballad.
