Manchester: Jesse Broad, 1936. Illustrated by Hard Hide (pseud.). First Edition. Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Undated, but 1936 or 1937. The binding is sound, with neither set of endpapers split, but the spine-cover is almost entirely missing. The remains of adehesive tape linger on both front and back boards. The interior of the book is in very good, clean condition. There is faint foxing on a few pages. On the half-title are pasted the bookplate of J. M. D. Lomax and a clipping from "Cheshire Life" magazine (July 1965) relating to the publication of the book. A gift inscription to the said Jean Lomax dated in 1950 is neatly written verso. "Tough Skin" (and presumably also "Hard Hide") are pseudonyms of a certain Miss Allen, who went on to write a hunting column for Cheshire Life on the strength of the success of this book, and found herself as a result in the libel court. The book contains pencil sketches and humorous biographical anecdotes of members of the Cheshire hunting community. Unpaginated, c148pp. (Book ref. 007778) £80.00
