Bowen, Marjorie (editor); James, Joshua Great Tales of Horror (Dustwrapper Only - with Tarantell)
London: The Bodley Head, 1945. Illustrated by N/a. First Edition. Green Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall A very good copy of a dustwrapper only - Great Tales of Horror, which has only survived because the publisher, adopting war time savings used this wrapper to print a different title on the reverse for a book called Tarantell by Joshua James in 1945 (first). We are selling this book along with the wrapper. These sheets could have been in a back-room for many years and so this may be the 1933 first edition printing. It bears a price of 6s. net to the corner of the wrapper. Tarantell was placed at the front and so this is dust-soiled etc. However, 'Great Tales of Horror by being on the reverse of the wrapper has survived free from any soiling. There are small chips to two corners and to the head of the spine with two tiny chips towards the head of the spine causing slight loss of text. There is a slight chip to the wrapper at the tail of the spine. There are several short tears to the wrapper - all expertly repaired and all at the head. There is a longer 5cm tear to the wrapper at the head, which has also been repaired with slight associated soiling. Tarantell the book remains in very fresh condition. There is a slight crack to the front inner-hinge probably caused by insect damage. No inscriptions - otherwise a super copy. A dustwrapper that would look great framed and hung by a collection of horror titles. (Book ref. 228220) £40.00

Parrinder, Patrick Learning from Other Worlds: Estrangement, Cognition, and the Politics of Science Fiction and Utopia
Liverpool: Liverpool University Press, 2000. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0853235848 Conveys the essence of cognitive estrangement in relation to science fiction (SF) and Utopia: that by imagining strange worlds we learn to see our own world in a new perspective. This raises the issue of the relationship between imaginative invention and allegory or fable. The contributors have all been influenced by Darko Suvin's belief that the double movement of estrangement and cognition reflects deep structures of human storytelling. Learning from otherness is as natural and inevitable a process as the instinct for imitation and representation that Aristotle described in his "Poetics". (Book ref. 038990) £9.99
