The Irish trained super horse Sir Ivor won the Epsom Derby thanks to Lester Piggott who held the horse up for a late run. Royal Palace the previous years Derby winner won five races. Ribero the son of Ribot won the Irish Sweeps Derby and the English St. Leger. Nole Murless was the Champion Trainer and Vincent O'Brien was the runner-up. Ribot was the Champion Sire and Sir Gaylord and Ballymoss were the runners-up. Lester was the Champion jockey with Scotsman Sandy Barclay and Australian Ron Hutchinson the runners-ups.
