The covers are dark chocolate brown cloth with a faded spine with worn gilt titles of the form " Textbooks of Science " " Metals " - " Bloxham and Huntingdon ". The front and back covers have impresed line borders and a circular emblem in the center. The front cover also has an impressed " Textbooks of Science ". The spine ends have some very short splits. There is a 1 1/2" split up from the bottom edge along the front edge of the spine. and there is a 3/4" split down from the top edge along the back spine edge. The cover edges have some rubbing and very short splits. The front cover has a lighter patch. There is a " Science and Art Department of the Committee of Council on Education South Kensington Queens Prize " prize label dated 1883 attached to the inside of the front cover. The front hinge has splits and is wobbly, the back hinge is secure with very minor splitting of the paper cover. The text is tight and has no marginalia. There is only a little pale foxing on the first and last few pages. xii, pp1- 452 including questions for examination and an index, + a two page listing of " Text-Books of Science, Mehanical and Physical, adapted for the use of artisans and students in public and science school " . published by Longmans.
