Colonel Patrick Crowley KUT 1916: COURAGE AND FAILURE IN IRAQ
2010, The History Press, , 9780752454474,c256pp, illustrations, New in d/w, , The siege of Kut is a story of blunders, sacrifice, imprisonment and escape. The allied campaign in Mesopotamia began in 1914 as a relatively simple operation to secure the oilfields in the Shatt-al-Arab Delta and Basra area. Initially it was a great success, but as the army pressed towards Baghdad its poor logistic support, training, equipment and command left it isolated and besieged by the Turks. By 1916 the army had not been relieved, and on 29 April 1916, the British Army suffered one of the worst defeats in its military history. Major-General Sir Charles Townshend surrendered his allied force to the Turks in the Mesopotamian (now Iraqi) town of Kut-al-Amara. (Book ref. 35980-01) £28.75

Lying between Italy and Libya, it was the ideal base for attacks on Axis shipping supplying the Italian and German forces in North Africa. To save Egypt, the Suez Canal and the Middle East oilfields from Nazi control, it was essential that the island be held at all costs. Malta soon became the most bombed place on earth, suffering more than 3000 enemy air raids. Such was the heroism of its people, King George VI awarded the Island the George Cross, the highest civilian award for valour. (Book ref. 31501-01) £13.80
