Cook J Gordon Your Guide to Plastics
Merrow Publishing, U.K., 1964 First Edition. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good . Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A Science For Everyman Book. 272 pages which includes an index. Illustrated with black and white plates and diagrams. ' The intrusion of plastics into our everyday lives has been a phenomenon of modern times. In " Your Guide to Plastics," Dr. J. Gordon Cook explains why plastics have achieved such tremendous importance during the last decade or two, and describes the different types of plastics that have taken part in this technical revolution. The ease with which plastics can be moulded into complex shapes is the most important characteristic of these extraordinary materials, and it is this that has enabled them to take pride of place in our mass-production age. Dr. Cook shows how this "shapability" of plastics derives from their unusual thread-like molecules. Our growing understanding of the behaviour of these thread-molecules, and the discovery of new methods of building them from smaller units, have made possible the rapid expansion of the modern plastics industry. In " Your Guide to Plastics," Dr. Cook traces the development of this understanding, from the early plastics such as celluloid and casein, to the silicones, nylons and other plastics of modern times. In common with the other books of the Science for Everyman Series, this book is written for the man-in-the-street who is interested in knowing about the influence of scientific developments on everyday life. At the end of the book, there is a Reference Section in which the student, or the reader employed in a branch of the plastics industry, will find additional technical information about important modern plastics '.
