PERTWEE,BILL**: A FUNNY WAY TO MAKE A LIVING!
LONDON.SUNBURST BOOKS,1996.. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.. Hardback.. FINE./FINE.. 8vo. 1857782682. UK, 8vo HB+dw/dj, 1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated,colour+b/w portrait photographic illustrated dw/dj with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+fore-edges slightly aged/tanned, contents bright, tight and clean - no dog-ear creases to any page's corners - an unread copy? Clean, publisher's original, navy-blue cloth bds with bright, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and b/w photographic theatre playbills, montage illustrated eps.8vo, 7-320pp [paginated] includes Jimmy Perry foreword, 10 chapters, 64pp contemporary b/w photographs in two blocks of 32pp apiece between pp64/97 and pp192-225 respectively. Dad's Army has become one of the classic television comedy series since it began nearly thirty years ago (then 1996).Bill Pertwee, the excitable Chief Air Raid Warden Hodges, was associated with it for the full nine-year run of the show which included nearly 70 radio episodes, a full length feature film and the stage musical. Bill was born 21, July 1926 and in his 70 years has farmed, helped build Spitfires, acted as a baggage boy on the 1946 Indian cricket tour of Britain and has worked as a window cleaner. In 1954 he offered Beryl Reid some comedy material and ended up on stage in her Revue; since then he has been a full-time professional actor. His remarkably varied career has included over a thousand radio broadcasts - including cult classics Beyond Our Ken and Round the Horne - television appearances in Jackonory, Chance in a Million, Blankety Blank, Wogan, several appearances in Pebble Mill programmes and four sereis of the BBC's You Rang M'Lord, written by the creators od Dad's Army, Jimmy Perry and David Croft. His theatre appearances include several seasons in London's West End in See How They Run, Worzel Gummidge, several Ray Cooney farces including the record-breaking Run For Your Wife, in which Bill also appeared in Canada. He has also toured exclusively in various stage plays in this country including Bernard Shaw's Candida.Other appearances in London have been at the Palladium and seasons at the famous Windmill Theatre, and his pantomimes with his old friends Roy Hudd and Jack Tripp are legendary. His autobiography is as humorous, entertaining and varies as you would expect from a man who has rubbed shoulders with the great names of theatre and comedy, like Spike Milligan, Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Horne, Michael Denison, Derek Nimmo, Evelyn Lays, Donald Sinden, George Burns and Sammy Davis Jnr to name but a few - and who has played cricket with Peter May, Colin Cowdrey, Bill Edrich and Freddie Trueman. In 1979 the man who had problems writing his own name accurately before the age of 12 turned to writing books. His first was a history of seaside entertainment, 'Promenades and Pierrots'; his second, 'By Royal Command', was a history of the theatre's association with the Royal Family. In 1989 came 'Dad's Army - The Making of a Television Legend', an instant bestseller which reprinted and went into paperback.'The Station Now Standing', about Britain's colourful railway stations, was published in 1991 and his fifth book was 'Stars in Battledress', about forces' personnel who entertained on the stage during WW2. WILMUT,ROGER**: FROM FRINGE TO FLYING CIRCUS - Celebrating a Unique Generation of Comedy 1960-1980.**
LONDON.EYRE METHUEN,1980.. UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.. Hardback.. NFINE./VG+.. Qrto. 0413469506. UK, Qrto HB+dw/dj, 1st edn.NFINE/VG+.No owner inscrptn, no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated b/w+colour photographic illustrated dw/dj with negligible shelf-wear and minimal creasing to edges and corners.Top+fore-edges lightly aged but generally clean, contents bright, tight and clean also.Large 8vo, 263pp includes notes, index, b/w photographs and illus, family tree fep, b/w photo-montage of participants. A celebration and history of twenty years of the very best of British comedy. When Beyond The Fringe opened at the Edinburgh Festival in 1960, it marked the official opening of what was to be a new era in British comedy in the theatre, radio, television and the cinema - an era largely dominated by writers and performers from student cabaret and revue who came into showbusiness almost accidentally. Beyond The Fringe starring Alan Bennett, Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller and Dudley Moore, changed the face of London Revue and paved the way for the so-called "satire boom" of the early sixties:The Establishment night-club, the magazine Private Eye and BBC TV's That Was The Week That Was.It also paved the way for a second wave of comedy, leading from Cambridge Circus and The Oxford Revue (amongst others) to a host of radio and television shows culminating in The Goodies (Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie) and Monty Python"s Flying Circus (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin). The complex and entertaining story of these educated comedians and their devastating impact on British comedy has been expertly chronicled by WILMUT.Contains many quotations from special interviews with the people involved and a wealth of hilarious script extracts - ranging from Alan Bennett's celebrated sermon to the famous Monty Python "Pet Shop" sketch - and vivid performance photographs and ephemera. The whole adds up to a feast of satire, wit and lunatic comedy.See also rja783 for another copy. BLOFELD,HENRY: "It's Just Not Cricket! - HENRY BLOFELD'S CRICKET YEAR."
LONDON.SIMON & SCHUSTER,1999.. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.. Hardback.. FINE./NFINE.. 8vo. 0684851520. UK, 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, white background with author's colour portrait photograph to upper wrap, literary reviews to rear wrap; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges - no nicks or tears present.Top +fore-edges slightly aged/tanned - as usual/normal - contents bright, tight and near pristine - no dog-ear creases to any pages' corners - an unread copy? Publisher's original clean, black cloth bds with bright, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate, plain white eps.8vo, 9-346pp [paginated] includes half-title+title pages, contents list/table, 13 chapters, 8pp contemporary b/w photographs between pp192/93+b/w map New Zealand, picture credits and an index and 6pp blanks to rear. There is no one quite like Henry Blofeld. His charm and cricket knowledge are unmatched in the game and on the radio airwaves. He is incapable of being dull as he casts his witty and waspish eye over the 1998-1999 cricket year. And it has been an unforgettable year for Henry himself as well as for the game of cricket. There was Geoffrey Boycott losing his assault case in the French courts - Blofeld has the full, behind- the-scenes story: the West Indian team strike: the scandal of match betting which tarnished the reputations of Australians Shane Warne and Mark Waugh:the rumpus on the pitch as Sri Lankan Captain Ranatunga marched his players off in protest at the no-balling of Muralithian: England's heroic loss of the Ashes in Australia (again, and always gallantly of course); Darren Gough's hat-trick; Brian Lara's incredible resurrection in the West Indies against Australia; and full inside details of the drama, excitement, heroes and villains of the 1999 Cricket World Cup. And Henry tells of how his season nearly came to a tragic halt as he was rushed to hospital with a major heart problem and how, as he was lying in bed three lengthy operations later, Test Match Special was whipped away by the predatory Talk Radio. But, as ebullient and as irrepressible as ever, Blowers straight bats these googlies with the zest and high spirits that make him so well loved by cricket fans and ordinary mortals alike. Among the great actresses and comediennes from the golden age of stage and screen, some stand out as legends of their time.In this hugely entertaining book the author draws upon interviews and conversations he had with a number of these grande dames of British theatre, some born during Queen Victoria's reign, many Dames of the British Empire. From Dame Peggy Ashcroft to Estelle Winwood, these Leading Ladies conquered both stage and screen, and their unique portrayals endure to this day both in memory and rerun after rerun of their classic films. Some were beloved comediennes, some created immortal screen characterizations, others lived their lives and legends mostly on stage.Whatever their particular gift, these riveting profiles reveal their warmth, wit and candour, and prompted by the author's searching - and often daring - questions we come to know them as never before. Boze Hadleigh, an Anglophile now living in Beverly Hills and a true devotee of these 'golden girls', sought out these personal interviews: in some cases it took years, but in all cases the result is exciting, nostalgic, intimate and surprising. His observations about each actress's career are interspersed with her own self-evaluation and comments about her professional and private life. The woman behind the leading lady emerges in each vivid, charming encounter. In all, they reveal not only the powerful and often eccentric personalities of these fine actresses, but also the magic and colour of a remarkable era. A critical analysis of the work of Laurel and Hardy, with biographical and production information included when it pertains to film content. In order to present a comprehensive analysis, many critical disciplines, including an historical overview, textual analysis, the auteur theory, genre analysis, psychoanalytic theory, and theory of film technique and structure, have been used. The main purpose of this text is to provide a survey of the cinematic techniques and the thematics of the Laurel and Hardy films.Certain motifs are discussed at length, with minor conclusions provided where they appear to be applicable. This author demonstrates no definitive analytical conclusions, since this attitude, if at all possible, can certainly lead one into a "nice mess" indeed. That realm is left open to the choice of each individual reader and film viewer. 'Benny Hill has made more people laugh longer than any entertainer in history,' his elder brother Leonard asserts in this witty, lively biography of the world's most popular comedian. For forty years Benny Hill has been to television what Charlie Chaplin was to silent movies.Today the Benny Hill Show is broadcast regularly in over 100 countries, including the USSR and China, and may be seen every night in the USA. Yet, though his comic genius is universally recognized, few people know the real Benny Hill. Why is the man behind the clown's makeup such a mystery? And what are the sources of his comic art? To answer these - and many other - questions, Leonard Hill tells for the first time the full, intimate story of Benny's life and career.Fascinating anecdotes reveal the extraordinary character and bizarre lifestyle of the man voted by Variety magazine 'Global TV's Top Banana'.Every aspect of Benny's development is described - from his difficult relationship with his father to his turbulent love-life. From Benny's birth in 1924 above a lamp shop in Southampton into a family with a circus tradition, Leonard shared his brother's upbringing and many of his experiences. He has performed onstage with Benny (who was christened Alfred), entertained in bomb-shelters with him during the Blitz, written scripts and songs with him, and given him his stage name, Benny. He has also spoken with relatives, friends, associates and famous fans, including Michael Bentine, Anthony Burgess, Michael Caine, Phil Collins, Lord Delfont, Phyllis Diller, Dick van Dyke, Jack Lemmon, Bob Monkhouse, Burt Reynolds, Joan Rivers, Twiggy, and Reg Varney. With humour and insight, he traces Benny's rise to fame via radio and television and describes his addiction to work (forever observing, forever inventing), his versatile caricatures and love of burlesque, as well as his deeply felt need for privacy, attitude to money and possessions - and,of course, his girlfriends.
