Hurst & Blackett , UK Reprint. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Good Condition. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Third Impression. Undated but Copac show it as [1938?]. Niuafo?ou (meaning: new coconut) is the most northerly island in the kingdom of Tonga. Because Niuafo’ou has no harbour, during the hurricane season sailing vessels did not come to load copra or bring passengers, cargo, and mail. However, the SS. Tofua did pass Niuafo'ou en route between Samoa and Fiji and Charles Stuart Ramsay, residing on Niuafoou, began swimming with the natives using the Niuafo'ou fishing technique of fakalukuluku, swimming with a floating pole, to convey soldered, forty-pound biscuit tins cans, of mail, hence the name ‘Tin Can Island’ to and from the steamer. The origin of the tin-can mail is described in Tin Can Island by C. S. Ramsay and C. P. Plumb, Hurst and Blackett, 1938.
