Explanation or Key, to the Various Manufactories of Sheffield, with Engravings of Each Article.
The Early American Industries Association 1975 (1816) A Good Copy in dustwrapper of the American facsimile made from the extremely rare 1816 original in the Sheffield City Archive. Commonly known as "Smiths Key" it is the first of the "Sheffield Lists" plus additional material comprising twenty two pages of introductory notes followed by 12pps of facsimiles of new material followed by the facsimile proper, the original 1816 publication. " The existence of the Key gives an invaluable detailed inventory of what was produced in this great center of the hard- ware trade. The work is divided into three parts, Part I comprising the rougher and cheaper line of products such as the tools for carpenters, joiners, coopers, curriers, farmers, etc. Part II is devoted to the cutlery trade - straight and folding knives, table ware, scissors, razors, candle snuffers, etc. - which doubtless formed the more lucrative part of the Sheffield trade. Part III, which is very brief, contains surgical and dental instruments. Quarto publishers brown linnen cloth. Another copy in excellent condition but without the dustwrapper is available @ £65. scans on request (Book ref. 4147) £75.00
