Gilt embossed lettering to the spine of the books. Light or slight fading to the moire spines - much less than is usually the case with this edition - they are still green and have not turned grey. No inscriptions. A slight soil mark to the fore-edge of 'Jane Eyre'. A bump to the head of the 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'. A slight bump to the tail of 'Shirley'. The very slightest of marks to the head of the 'E' of 'The professor'. The slipcase - also covered with silk sides is in very good plus condition. There is a bump to one corner of the slipcase. Longman Brown Green & Longmans, 1854 12mo., Fourth Edition, text in double column, with an engraved frontispiece, engraved and printed titles, and over 900 finely detailed woodcut illustrations in the text, frontispiece and engraved title very lightly age-soiled at margins, neat nineteenth century signature on front free endpaper; original decorative green cloth, upper board and backstrip elaborately blocked in blind and lettered in gilt, uncut, rebacked with old backstrip laid down, joints rubbed else a good, firm copy. First published in 1848. Good, clean copy of one of the most profusely illustrated mid-nineteenth century compilations of natural history. The fine frontispiece collecting a large number of species is engraved by Adlard after Marchant. 'Maunder' remained a standard reference until at least the late 1880s. Freeman (BNHB) 2532.
